WorleyParsons provided concept development and process design for the project. Norilsk Nickel’s copper smelters (among the largest in the world) generate over 4,000 tpd of sulphur dioxide, of which a substantial portion is routinely emitted to the atmosphere.
This is due to the efficiency and reliability limitations of conventional technologies. New solutions were needed to meet more stringent emission standards. The difficulty of achieving these standards was compounded by the large equipment scale and indoor space constraints, typical of arctic locations.
Our team met the challenge through research and innovation culminating in the new Rameshni SO2 Reduction (RSR™) process. A patent has been awarded for this process. The RSR™ process economically converts SO2 to a saleable elemental sulphur product. After rigorous comparison of alternatives, Norilsk Nickel selected the RSR™ process for a 1,100 tpd sulphur production facility.
