The project involved using gas produced in the wastewater treatment process as a fuel for cogeneration and harnessing potential energy in gravity fed water and wastewater flow for hydroelectric generation using mini-turbines.
With a combined capacity of over 8 MW, the facilities are achieving significant cost savings and an estimated CO2 abatement of over 50,000 tonnes per annum. This represents a 15% reduction in Sydney Water’s reliance on fossil fuel generated electricity and a significant contribution to its commitment to become carbon neutral by 2020.
