During the evaluation phase, WorleyParsons technically evaluated different ethylene technologies, which was key to the award of one of the EPC contracts.
This was the first major project for Borouge, which is a joint venture formed by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Borealis of Denmark, established in 1998 to provide diversification for ADNOC’s petrochemicals sector. The completion of the petrochemicals complex in Ruwais on April 30, 2002 was an important step in developing the downstream section of the oil and gas industry of Abu Dhabi.
The Borouge Petrochemicals Project was designed to produce 450,000 tonnes/year of high density and low density polyethylene and export 150,000 tonnes/year of surplus ethylene to an ethyl dichloride plant which ADNOC intended to build. The ethyl dichloride plant was subsequently cancelled in late 1999, and facilities to export the surplus ethylene were added to the project scope.
The total project investment for the new company owners was approximately USD1.4 billion. This prestigious project was completed on schedule and under budget and had an impressive safety record with over 40 million man hours worked at site resulting in a Lost Time Frequency of 0.06.
