WorleyParsons welcomes the decision by the joint venture partners in Worsley Alumina to finally approve the Efficiency & Growth Expansion Project at the Worsley refinery in Western Australia.
The decision will involve an estimated capital investment of US$1.9 billion by the joint venture partners, BHP Billiton (86%), Japan Alumina Associates (Australia) (10%) and Sojitz Alumina (4%).
WorleyParsons has been working on the extended Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and scope definition of the project as the primary subcontractor to Bechtel, the EPCM contractor, since the contract award in 2005.
While work on the project has been underway since 2005, the implementation phase has only recently been sanctioned by Worsley Alumina. The combined revenue to WorleyParsons from the project is expected to be approximately A$58 million over 2½ years.
The Efficiency & Growth Expansion Project will lift capacity of the Worsley refinery from 3.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of alumina to 4.6 Mtpa through expanded mining operations, additional refinery capacity and upgraded port facilities. The project will also provide opportunities to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions and improve water efficiency.
WorleyParsons’ Chief Executive Officer, Mr John Grill, said:
“We are delighted to support Bechtel in this very important asset development for BHP Billiton and the Worsley Alumina partners. WorleyParsons has long term relationships with both Bechtel and Worsley Alumina. It is exciting to have the opportunity to continue our involvement in the expansion and improvement of the Worsley refinery.”
